MATCHBOX HISTORY 30 years ago, I was invited by Andy Warhol and Jean Michele Basquiat to participate in an exhibition in the East Village called the "Matchbox Show". Artists were asked to paint on match covers or matchboxes, etc. I created 10 individually sculpted oil paintings with an assortment of themes...Comic, Romance, Historical, Egyptian, Masters- (Raphael's Madonna and Child), etc. to name a few. It was at this show while exhibiting my miniature paintings that an art dealer saw them and I was offered my first solo in NYC.
In 2008 I re-visited this theme and began offering my sculpted matchboxes monotypes in sets of five or six framed in shadow boxes. All of the individual matchboxes are based on my sculpted oil paintings, and cover the spectrum of my subject matter and themes.
